Having a capsule wardrobe is not very bradimalist. In this article, I explained what bradimalism is, which in some aspects is really different from minimalism. If you are a minimalist, the capsule wardrobe is for you. But even if you are bradimalist, the capsule wardrobe can work perfectly as a starting point, to then be integrated with other more dazzling and less classic pieces.

What is a Capsule Wardrobe and How Does It Work

The capsule wardrobe, in essence, is based on classic and evergreen pieces that fit practically every situation. Let me give you a practical example: I have a blue suit jacket and pants, and I need to be out all day because I have a job interview, the office, and happy hour. By simply changing what I wear under the jacket, I can manage my entire day without problems: I will wear a shirt for the interview, but if that’s too much for the office, I can always tone it down with a printed t-shirt. For happy hour, I can think of wearing a low-cut top with a statement necklace, and there you go, starting from a super classic piece, we can look perfect at every moment of the day!

How to Build a Capsule Wardrobe Starting with Colors

When we talk about classic colors in the wardrobe, we mean:

  • Black
  • Blue
  • Gray
  • White
  • Beige – camel
  • (brown)

I put brown in parentheses because hardly anyone uses it, usually preferring the more discreet camel. White is also not very commonly used because it is a rather difficult color to maintain (for example, in a suit, but if it suits you… why not? In this regard, before building your capsule wardrobe, I recommend doing a color analysis to understand which colors suit you best. For example, I discovered that I should avoid black, preferring blue and especially gray. Worse than black is only camel (at most I can choose beige in its colder version, almost taupe.

Which Basic Pieces to Invest In

After identifying your go-to colors, here are the pieces I suggest you buy. For these items, you can also consider spending a lot because, ideally, they should last you a lifetime. So yes to high-quality materials like cashmere, angora, wool for coats, and so on. If you can, also avoid polyester suits. Invest in the purchase of:

  • A jacket
  • A pair of pants
  • A coat
  • A pair of shoes
  • A shirt
  • A lightweight sweater
  • A heavy sweater

You can also purchase these items in two colors to avoid the pajama effect, but generally, to break up an outfit of the same color, scarves, belts, and statement necklaces are enough. It’s up to your taste to decide how well you can handle total color; the important thing is that the items you buy have almost identical colors. Unfortunately, there are thousands of shades of blue and beige, so it’s important to see them in person because photos online can be misleading. If you find yourself with shoes of a different blue than your pants and jacket, the potential for matching collapses.

In general, when we shop, we should already have in mind the combinations we want to make. I’ll show you this in practice with this Lookiero package. I know, I was a bit disappointed with the heaviness of the clothes, but did you notice the care in the choice of colors? All the pieces match each other because they have the same blue and almost the same pink.

So remember the golden rule: don’t buy if you can’t match! These were my tips for creating a capsule wardrobe. Later, we will also see how to transform it to make it fit our style and therefore truly ours!
