If you're lazy, cleaning the house might not be the most exciting task. Let's be clear, it's not thrilling for anyone, but we particularly dread the dust bunnies that seem to multiply and take over. How can we tackle laziness in household chores and emerge victorious, without stress and with minimal effort? We all know how easy it is to procrastinate on household tasks, especially when you'd rather spend time doing something else, like binge-watching yet another TV series or enjoying a relaxing afternoon with moisturizer on your skin (this is my current one, the link is affiliate).
Here are some strategies I've adopted to make my home life more manageable, even when my sloth spirit takes over.
The “10-Minute Rule”: My Lifesaver for Lazy Cleaning
Laziness in house cleaning is best fought with small steps, and this is where the 10-minute rule comes into play. The idea is simple yet brilliant: when my motivation to clean is at an all-time low, I tell myself, "Okay, I'll clean for just 10 minutes." I grab my phone timer, or the cat-shaped one if it's within reach, set it, and dive in. It may seem like a little, but often it's enough to give a room a nice refresh or to finish a small task I've been putting off.
The interesting part is that once I start, it’s not as terrible as it seems. Those ten minutes fly by, and I often find myself continuing beyond the set time (miracle!). But if that doesn’t happen, it’s okay: when the timer goes off, I can comfortably return to my computer knowing that at least I accomplished something. It’s a little trick to keep the clutter in check without being overwhelmed by fatigue or laziness. Just the other day, while tidying up, I found this tanning accelerator (#aff) and had quite the internal dialogue about it. "But why? – you might say – summer ended two days ago!" Well, unfortunately, this was from last year! Thankfully, with the move, I have a small excuse.
“One Area at a Time” and Fear (or Laziness) Be Gone
Another trick that has changed my life (and my home) is the “one area at a time” approach. Anyone who has ever tried to clean the entire house in one day knows how discouraging it can be just to think about it. It’s like climbing an imaginary mountain of dust bunnies. When you have asthma. Instead, breaking the house down into small areas makes everything easier and, above all, less stressful.

If I focus only on the kitchen or just the bathrooms, for example, I don’t feel overwhelmed. I choose one room or a specific corner, put on an audiobook (if you click on this affiliate link, you can try Audible for free for a month; there are tons of books and podcasts, including one that explains how to keep your house clean in ten minutes a day, which I literally devoured!) and proceed calmly. When I’m done, I treat myself to a little reward break, even if it’s just a cuddle session or playtime with Prandy. What’s better than rewarding yourself after putting in some effort (at least a little)?
This method helps me not only to be more productive but also to avoid turning cleaning into a monumental event that takes up the entire day. Little by little, everything gets sorted, and the house becomes a bit more organized and welcoming each day, while also learning something new thanks to audiobooks!
Delegating to Technology: Why the Real Secret is Making Others (or Robots) Work for You
For us Sloths, the real trick in life is delegation, and fortunately, technology gives us a big hand today. Personally, as I mentioned in another post, my best friend at home is the robot vacuum, which roams around the floor while I sit back and sip tea. It’s a brilliant solution to avoid having to vacuum every day, and it makes me feel productive even when I’m not doing anything related to cleaning.
Then there are smart washing machines, self-cleaning ovens… In short, we live in an era where we can afford to let technology do the dirty work for us. I don’t yet have all the appliances I want, but I’m working on it; sure, some small gestures still need to be done, but the idea of being able to count on these hi-tech helpers allows me to relax even more, perhaps while applying another layer of moisturizer (you’ve figured out that I love creams, right?).
Conclusions from a Sloth on the Path to Redemption
Finding the right balance between my natural inclination to laziness and the need to keep the house tidy hasn’t been easy, but thanks to little tricks like the “10-minute rule” and the “one area at a time” approach, I’ve managed not to feel overwhelmed. It’s all about taking things slowly, not fixating on the idea that the house has to be perfect at all times, and remembering that allowing yourself breaks and little treats (not necessarily moisturizer, eh!) is part of the process.
And if you really can’t manage, there are always robots ready to lend a hand. In the meantime, I’ll get comfortable with my favorite cream and let technology do the rest.
These aren’t the only tricks I’ve developed, but I didn’t want to go on too long. I’ll share more soon. In the meantime, if you’d like, you can subscribe to the newsletter or follow me on Instagram and tell me if cleaning is a hassle for you too!
