The truth is that there is no universal timeframe. Mortar dries differently depending on ambient temperature, humidity levels, layer thickness, and the nature of the substrate. Here’s what you need to understand before loading a floor or painting a wall.

Drying Times Based on Mortar Type

Traditional Mortar

A standard cement-sand mortar reaches initial set in 2 to 4 hours under normal conditions—around 20 °C and 50% relative humidity. However, this initial set does not indicate mechanical strength. Foot traffic is generally permissible after 24 to 48 hours, while full loading (heavy furniture or vehicles on a slab) requires 28 days—the recognized curing period according to European standards.

Many confuse "drying" with "hardening." Drying refers to the evaporation of free water, while hardening is a chemical reaction—the hydration of cement—that continues for weeks or even months.

Tile Adhesive Mortar

Tile adhesives (C1 or C2 types as per EN 12004 standards) have open times ranging from 20 to 30 minutes. Walking on the tiles is usually allowed after 24 hours, with grouting waiting a minimum of 24 to 48 hours. For large format tiles or in wet areas, manufacturers like Weber or Mapei recommend waiting 72 hours before exposing them to water.

Self-Leveling and Coating Mortar

Self-leveling compounds dry quickly on the surface—sometimes in just 2 to 3 hours—but remain fragile for 24 hours. A hydraulic facade coating requires a minimum drying period of 3 weeks before applying mineral paint. Applying a covering too soon can trap residual moisture, leading to blisters or detachment.

Factors Influencing Drying Speed

Temperature: The Primary Factor

When temperatures drop below 5 °C, the hydration reaction of cement almost halts. Installing mortar in cold weather without protection risks freezing the interstitial water, resulting in catastrophic final strength. Conversely, temperatures exceeding 30 °C cause rapid evaporation, leading to a loss of water before the chemical reaction completes, which can create shrinkage cracks.

The ideal range for drying is between 10 and 25 °C. Within this window, the drying times provided by manufacturers are reliable.

Humidity and Wind

High humidity levels (above 80%) slow down surface evaporation without speeding up the chemical curing process. This results in the mortar staying tacky on the surface while hardening properly below. Strong winds, on the other hand, can dry the surface rapidly. On outdoor sites exposed to winds like mistral or tramontane, it is essential to regularly moisten the surface during the first 24 hours—this is known as wet curing.

Layer Thickness

It’s a mathematical fact: the thicker the layer, the longer the drying time. A 5 cm thick screed takes about one week per centimeter to dry sufficiently before the final covering can be applied—meaning a minimum of 5 weeks under normal conditions. This is a simple rule often overlooked on time-pressured job sites.

  • Thin layer (less than 2 cm): complete drying in 7 to 14 days
  • Traditional screed (4 to 6 cm): a minimum of 4 to 6 weeks
  • Structural concrete slab (more than 10 cm): 2 to 3 months before laying moisture-sensitive flooring

Common Mistakes That Ruin Proper Drying

Premature Loading

A tiler returning the next day to install baseboards and rolling a cart over fresh adhesive is a common scenario. A tile that detaches six months later is another. The rule of waiting a minimum of 24 hours is a baseline, not an average. On non-absorbent substrates (like tiles over tiles or smooth surfaces), it is safer to wait around 48 hours.

Closing Off the Workspace Too Soon

Painting a damp room immediately after leveling to meet a deadline is a typical mistake. Trapped moisture under the paint can lead to salt efflorescence or peeling of the covering within weeks. A wall probe hygrometer, costing 30 to 50 euros, is one of the most cost-effective tools in finishing work.

Using Excess Water in Mixing

The more fluid the mortar, the more free water it contains that must evaporate. A high water-to-cement ratio prolongs drying time, reduces final strength, and increases shrinkage. It is crucial to adhere strictly to the manufacturer’s mixing instructions without attempting to adjust for ease of application.

Practical Tips for Adhering to Drying Times

Tailor Your Approach to Job Site Conditions

In hot and dry weather, protect the mortar with a tarp or damp kraft paper during the first 24 hours. In cold weather, heat the room before and during installation, maintaining a positive temperature for at least 48 hours afterward. Certain additives can accelerate setting (useful in winter) or slow evaporation (helpful in summer)—these are compatible with most ready-mixed mortars.

  1. Check ambient temperature and substrate temperature before starting
  2. Follow the water/powder ratio specified on the bag
  3. Protect the surface during the initial hours according to weather conditions
  4. Measure residual humidity with a hygrometer before applying any covering
  5. Never rely solely on touch to judge the setting

When Can the Final Covering Be Applied?

The reference method for checking moisture in a screed before laying parquet or flexible flooring is using a probe hygrometer, with a target threshold of 2% CM (calcium carbide) for engineered wood, and 1.8% CM for solid wood. These figures are derived from DTU 51.1 and 53.1 standards—valid in case of disputes.

For tiling, the substrate can be slightly more humid (up to 3-4% depending on the adhesive mortars), but excessive moisture remains the leading cause of detachment noted during inspections. Taking the time to measure rather than relying on visual estimates often distinguishes a project that requires no callbacks from one that does.
