Celebrating Carnival Without the Hangover – Household Management Tips

Carnival festivities can lead to hangovers. Learn how to avoid them and manage symptoms if they occur with these household management tips.

Carnival festivities can be lengthy, and the nights can be short. How can you avoid a hangover afterwards – and how do you cope if you do end up with one?

Almost everyone has experienced it at some point, but no one truly enjoys the aftermath of a night of revelry. The headache, the upset stomach, and the feeling of fatigue can be overwhelming. So, what causes this hangover effect?

Excessive alcohol consumption leads to increased water loss through the kidneys, resulting in dehydration and the loss of essential minerals. Additionally, the liver requires a significant amount of vitamins to detoxify the body, and more oxygen is needed to metabolize the alcohol. To compound the issue, blood sugar levels drop. Consequently, the next morning, you may find yourself extremely thirsty, weak, and generally unwell, with the bed feeling like the only tolerable place to be. What strategies can help mitigate the hangover during Carnival?

Eat First, Then Moderate Never drink on an empty stomach! Hearty meals can slow alcohol absorption. Even if you typically watch your caloric intake, the opposite is true for party nights.

Indulge in satisfying foods such as fried eggs with ham and bacon or currywurst with fries. The key rule is to enjoy in moderation while making wise choices. Mixing various alcoholic beverages like wine, beer, cocktails, and spirits can lead to a hangover, even with a full stomach.

Stick to one type of alcoholic drink. Generally, white wine, gin, and vodka are easier on the system. Remember to drink still water in between alcoholic beverages, as carbonated drinks can enhance alcohol absorption. Before heading home, make sure to hydrate with plenty of water and sleep in a well-ventilated room with the window open.

What to Do “Afterwards” If you wake up the next morning with a pounding headache, here are some remedies:

  • Get up, open the window wide, take deep breaths, and gently stretch. This helps oxygen flow into your bloodstream. Follow this with a hot and cold shower to stimulate circulation.
  • Alcohol consumption causes fluid loss, so replenish your body with mineral water, which also provides essential minerals.
  • If you feel hungry, consider eating salty or sour snacks like pickled herring or sauerkraut. These foods offer protein, minerals, and electrolytes that your body craves at this time.
